SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) are planning-led methods for managing surface water runoff from paved surfaces, designed to reduce flooding and water pollution while allowing natural infiltration where possible.
SuDS stands for Sustainable Drainage Systems, a water management approach that has become a requirement under Building Regulations in England since 2020. When new driveways, patios, or other paved areas are built, drainage arrangements must follow SuDS principles rather than simply channelling water into mains sewers or surface water drains.
The core purpose of SuDS is threefold: reduce flooding risk by slowing water runoff, improve water quality by filtering pollutants, and allow rainwater to soak back into the ground where soil conditions permit. This mimics natural drainage patterns rather than concentrating water flow into existing sewerage systems, which can become overwhelmed during heavy rain.
For driveway installations, permeable paving surfaces (such as gravel, porous asphalt, or specialist block systems) sit at the centre of most SuDS designs. These materials allow rainwater to drain through the surface layer into a sub-base of aggregate or stone, from where it either infiltrates into the soil or is directed to a controlled outlet. Traditional impermeable asphalt or concrete, by contrast, sheds water directly as runoff.
