What is kiln-dried sand?

Kiln-dried sand is fine sand that has been heated in a kiln to remove all moisture content. It is brushed into the joints between paving blocks, where it compacts and hardens when exposed to water, creating a solid bond that locks the blocks firmly in place.

The sand serves several practical purposes in block paving work. By filling the gaps between blocks, it prevents weeds from taking root in the joints. It also stops water from draining into voids beneath the paving, which reduces the risk of settlement or movement. The heat treatment distinguishes kiln-dried sand from ordinary washed sand, as the absence of moisture allows it to flow easily into tight joints and prevents it from clumping during application.
